I work with veterans and their families helping to heal the wounds of war. War takes a particularly high toll on soldiers and their families. There is a big need for helpful resources to help veterans re-enter society, find employment, and help their families adjust to their homecomings. We now have an entire generation of soldiers and families who have lived with war as their backdrop for many years.
Warfare in the 21st century has its own unique sets of problems, from higher survival rates because of advances in medical technology, to a greater number of disabled veterans coming home. These disabled veterans have to learn to live a completely different life than they were living in the war zone, and a completely different life than they lived before going to war. These adjustments, plus dealing with the psychological toll that war takes on both the veteran and the family, makes returning home very traumatic. The family has a big adjustment to make when a veteran returns, whether disabled or not, as after leaving a war zone, war doesn’t leave the mind. It is very difficult and sometime nearly impossible for veterans to jump back into civilian life without assistance.
Today’s soldiers also have a different experience than soldiers did in the past. Because of the internet, instant messaging and web cams, social networking sites and other forms of modern communication, today’s soldiers are never very far from home. They can experience their families at home in real time. This can be both negative and positive because they are exposed to the happy times at home as well as the difficulties and negative things that are going on there. This increases the burden they must carry in addition to the burden of being at war.
If you are a veteran who chooses to work with me, we will address both the trauma you have experienced at war, find ways so that you and your family can honor your sacrifice and that of your fellow soldiers comrades that are still fighting. We will face and resolve the problems of reintegration and your transition back into family and civilian life.
Veterans and their families deserve to be honored and cared for, both when they are at war, and especially when they return so that they can live full and loving lives and leave the traumas of the past behind.
