Anxiety Counseling

Are you noticing that you are experiencing more anxiety and fear around financial concerns, availability of jobs, and/ or the overwhelming amount of information that you take in everyday, such as the news or more responsibilities? You are not alone if you are. Because of the amount stress so many folks are faced with, it is increasing our levels of anxiety. Experiencing continual anxiety affects your general wellbeing, levels of productivity, sleep, immune system and relationships. Everyone deals with anxiety and stress differently. Some folks seem to be doing well and then find themselves in the emergency room with symptoms of a heart attack, only to find out that they are having an anxiety attack. Others can go for years without seemingly having any symptoms of anxiety and one day find themselves faced with a serious illness or loss of important relationships—indicating a need for counseling.

When you are dealing with anxiety, it is difficult to be present in the moment because your mind is so active that you can’t think straight. An overactive mind or "monkey brain" is one of the side effects of anxiety and stress. Have you ever noticed talking with someone and they don’t seem to be present or listening? Or someone is talking to you and you don’t hear a word that they are saying? This is what happens when anxiety takes over, and often times it is an unconscious behavior. That is, you may not even notice that you’re not listening or hearing what the other person is saying, so counseling doesn't even suggest itself to you.

Anxiety can drive you to want to shutdown with TV, alcohol, drugs or other distractions, just to take the edge off. Yet what happens may only increase the anxiety because the outcome never changes. You’re still left with the source of the anxiety.

We live in a culture that has been described as pseudo attention deficient disorder. What that means, is that we are flooded with information and stimulus constantly. From the computer, to cell phones, TV, radio, and external noises, our brains can get overloaded. Things that are suppose to make our lives easier, such as computers and cell phone, often make our lives more complicated and busy.

When you get overloaded with too much information, the front part of your brain, the frontal lobe becomes overwhelmed and you start operating from your old brain, also called the “lizard” brain. The frontal lobe is the area of the brain that helps you make decisions. The “lizard” brain is the “flight or fight” part of the brain whose primary function is survival. If you are operating from your lizard brain, which a lot of folks are, decisions tend to be made in a reactive manner rather than taking the time to decide if it would be the right decision. All of this creates more anxiety.
